Gregory Crewdson’s latest series, Sanctuary, is virtually devoid of human presence, in black and white and utilizes natural light. It was shot on location at the legendary Cinecittà studios in Rome, which after serving as modern Rome in La Dolce Vita, the California desert in Once Upon a Time in the West, 19th-century Manhattan in Gangs of New York, and dozens of other places, has been abandoned and left to the elements. +
